Following the success of her work, You Know We Belong Together in 2018 Julia Hales began dreaming of her next work in which she would place herself, a woman with Down syndrome, as the central object of desire in her favourite TV franchise.

After seeing a 2020 FRINGE show, Onstage Dating, by award winning performer, Bron Batten, Julia approached Bron to collaborate with her to develop The New Bachelorette.

    JULIA HALES is a performance artist with Down Syndrome living in Perth. She presented her award-winning theatre work You Know We Belong Together at the Perth Festival and is soon to tour it to the Edinburgh International Festival.

    She was recently the star of the ABC documentary The Upside and has been an associate artist with Black Swan State Theatre Company.

    Julia is a Taurean, she likes to go out and do things like going to the theatre, enjoys horse riding, watching Home and Away and has a large collection of romantic comedies on DVD.

  • Bron Batten

    BRON BATTEN is a multi-award-winning performer, theatre-maker and producer based in Naarm/Melbourne.

    Bron’s work has toured throughout Australia, New Zealand, the USA, France, the UK, Germany, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Romania.

    It has also been presented at The Soho Theatre London, Komedia Brighton UK, The Prague Quadrennial, Performing Arts Festival Berlin, Darwin Festival, Brisbane Festival, Dark MOFO and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

    Bron is a Capricorn, enjoys long walks along the beach, strongly believes that chocolate mint chip is the best ice-cream flavour and is in awe of anyone who can drive a manual.
